2011 Mock Draft 2.0 - Hultzen vs. Cole

2011 Mock Draft 2.0 - Hultzen vs. Cole

The MLB Draft is less than a week away, and things are starting to get interesting. The rumor mill is working overtime and teams are beginning to narrow their options in the first round. With that, here's Scout.com's second 2011 Mock Draft. This will be updated one more time the morning of the draft. (FREE PREVIEW)

Pick
1
Pittsburgh Pirates
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200
Hometown: Bethesda, MD
Current Team: Virginia
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Neal Huntington
Scouting Director: Greg Smith

ANALYSIS: The Pirates legitimately have not made a decision as of yet and are torn between Hultzen and Cole. But, it does seem that those are the names they've narrowed it down to. Hultzen seems to have a slight edge over Cole, but it's still negligible and the Pirates remain in the midst of a discussion over who to take.

Pick
2
Seattle Mariners
Player: Gerrit Cole
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220
Hometown: Santa Ana, CA
Current Team: UCLA
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Jack Zduriencik
Scouting Director: Tom McNamara

ANALYSIS: There's been a lot of differing rumors on Seattle. Some buzz has them locked in on Rendon, and others in the industry say they are very turned off by the issue over his medical reports and would look elsewhere, particularly if Cole was available. They've considered Starling and Lindor, but the temptation of Cole just seems too great to pass up.

Pick
3
Arizona Diamondbacks
Player: Trevor Bauer
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185
Hometown: Valencia,  CA
Current Team: UCLA
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Kevin Towers
Scouting Director: Ray Montgomery

ANALYSIS: Word is that Arizona's preference is Hultzen followed by Bauer. With Hultzen off the board in this scenario, as well as Cole, the DBacks will likely turn to Trevor Bauer here. They may consider Dylan Bundy as well, but have really taken a liking to the UCLA righty.

Pick
4
Baltimore Orioles
Player: Dylan Bundy
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200
Hometown: Sperry, OK
Current Team: Owasso HS
Position: P
Bats: B
Throws: R

General Manager: Andy MacPhail
Scouting Director: Joe Jordan

ANALYSIS: It's been no secret how much the O's covet Dylan Bundy. Rendon has a shot to still be available here, however, and it will be interesting to see if that influences their decision. Ultimately they view Bundy, like many teams do, as more of a college pitcher and don't see him as much of a gamble.

Pick
5
Kansas City Royals
Height: 6-0
Weight: 190
Hometown: Houston, TX
Current Team: Rice
Position: 3B
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Dayton Moore
Scouting Director: Lonnie Goldberg

ANALYSIS: Kansas City is laying in the weeds for Rendon and would jump at the chance to take him. He probably would slide no further than this. But, the fact is he still has a chance to go as high as number one, so there's a lot of scenarios that could play out. Gerrit Cole is their top choice, followed by Rendon, then Matt Barnes. If Rendon is still around, though, they'd grab him over anyone but Cole.

Pick
6
Washington Nationals
Player: Matt Barnes
Height: 6-4
Weight: 205
Hometown: Bethel, CT
Current Team: Connecticut
Position: SP
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Mike Rizzo
Scouting Director: Kris Kline

ANALYSIS: Washington will almost certainly nab an arm in this spot. They probably won't get a shot at Dylan Bundy or Bauer, but Barnes is also high on their list and they'd be very pleased to have him. There are scenarios where all three could be gone, however, and in that case they may turn to Sonny Gray.

Pick
7
Arizona Diamondbacks
Player: Javier Baez
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205
Hometown: Toa Baja, PR
Position: SS
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Kevin Towers
Scouting Director: Ray Montgomery

ANALYSIS: The industry has had a tough time getting a handle on what Arizona has in mind for this pick. But, logic says they'll be leaning towards someone signable. Baez is just that and is not a reach in this spot. Word is they would like to stockpile arms, however, so Gray, Jungmann, and Bradley could all be in play here.

Pick
8
Cleveland Indians
Player: Sonny Gray
Height: 6-11
Weight: 180
Hometown: Smyrna, TN
Current Team: Vanderbilt
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Chris Antonetti
Scouting Director: Brad Grant

ANALYSIS: Francisco Lindor has been a hot name for Cleveland, but the reality is that the Indians will probably stick to the plan and take a college arm. In this scenario, Sonny Gray is probably the best one available. Sources say there is internal debate over Gray versus Jed Bradley.

Pick
9
Chicago Cubs
Height: 6-5
Weight: 190
Hometown: Gardner, KS
Current Team: Gardner-Edgerton HS
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Jim Hendry
Scouting Director: Tim Wilken

ANALYSIS: The Cubs love George Springer in this spot, but most evaluators agree that it will be hard for them to pass on Bubba Starling. They've looked into Archie Bradley, and they have heavy interest in Mikie Mahtook as well. None of these players would be surprising but ultimately Starling will be too tough to pass.

Pick
10
San Diego Padres
Height: 6-0
Weight: 175
Hometown: Clarks Summit, PA
Current Team: Indian River College
Position: 3B
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Jed Hoyer
Scouting Director: Jaron Madison

ANALYSIS: Spangenberg to the Padres has become so common a rumor, there was hesitation to even put him here. Often when a rumor is this persistent it turns out the team is going in another direction. For now, we stick with it though. The Padres have been keeping tabs on Sonny Gray, George Springer, Jed Bradley, and many others as well. Don't rule Javier Baez or Lindor here either.

Pick
11
Houston Astros
Player: Jed Bradley
Height: 6-4
Weight: 224
Hometown: Huntsville, AL
Current Team: Georgia Tech
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Ed Wade
Scouting Director: Bobby Heck

ANALYSIS: There has been some buzz that Houston May actually be willing to spend big bucks this year, particularly if Bubba Starling were to slide. Most in the industry don't believe they'll go that way when it comes down it, but the rumors persist about Starling and Archie Bradley. If someone like Jed Bradley is available, it makes their decision easier.

Pick
12
Milwaukee Brewers
Height: 6-3
Weight: 220
Hometown: Broken Arrow, OK
Current Team: Broken Arrow HS
Position: SP
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Doug Melvin
Scouting Director: Bruce Seid

ANALYSIS: Milwaukee has been linked to a boatload of names, and they may believe they won't get their shot at Archie Bradley. It's hard to see them resisting his arm twice in the same round. Jungmann and Mahtook also lead their short list.

Pick
13
New York Mets
Height: 7-6
Weight: 195
Hometown: Georgetown, TX
Current Team: Texas
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Sandy Alderson
Scouting Director: Chad MacDonald

ANALYSIS: The Mets would love a crack at Sonny Gray, but that seems unrealistic. Otherwise, it's as close as it gets to a lock that the Mets will take take either Taylor Jungmann or Jed Bradley, whoever is still available. And, it seems very likely that at least one of them will be. If both are available, Jungmann is their preference. No team is on the Texas righty more than New York.

Pick
14
Florida Marlins
Player: Levi Michael
Height: 6-10
Weight: 180
Hometown: Welcome, NC
Current Team: North Carolina
Position: SS
Bats: B
Throws: R

General Manager: Larry Beinfest
Scouting Director: Stan Meek

ANALYSIS: With the Mets clearly lean toward college pitching, the Marlins could go after the UNC shortstop. They might consider one of the prep arms like Norris or Guerrieri but ultimately are likely to prefer the polished collegiate player.

Pick
15
Milwaukee Brewers
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195
Hometown: Lafayette, LA
Current Team: Louisiana State
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Doug Melvin
Scouting Director: Bruce Seid

ANALYSIS: Mahtook probably won't fall any further than this. He has a lot of takers, including the Cubs at pick nine. Again, Milwaukee is letting this thing play out and are considering a large variety of names.

Pick
16
Los Angeles Dodgers
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185
Hometown: Martinez, CA
Current Team: Alhambra HS
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Ned Colletti
Scouting Director: Logan White

ANALYSIS: Stephenson is projectable, and has outstanding present stuff. And, best of all for Los Angeles, he's going to be affordable. I've heard this connection quite a bit in the last 24 hours and it's one of the strongest rumors out there.

Pick
17
Los Angeles Angels
Height: 6-11
Weight: 180
Hometown: Caguas, PR
Current Team: Montverde Academy
Position: SS
Bats: B
Throws: R

General Manager: Tony Reagins
Scouting Director: Ric Wilson

ANALYSIS: The Angels are banking on one of the top prep players falling into their lap. And, it's pretty safe to say one of them will. Lindor may go much higher than this, but it's also as far as he'll fall. They would not pass him up.

Pick
18
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200
Hometown: New Britain, CT
Current Team: Connecticut
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Billy Beane
Scouting Director: Eric Kubota

ANALYSIS: Like Lindor, this is probably Springer's floor. The Cubs could pop him in the top ten, and Milwaukee is in on him as well. Oakland is being linked to most of the bats out there, but Springer is the best talent among them.

Pick
19
Boston Red Sox
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175
Hometown: Rio Rancho, NM
Current Team: Cleveland HS
Position: C
Bats: B
Throws: R

General Manager: Theo Epstein
Scouting Director: Amiel Sawdaye

ANALYSIS: I'd be shocked to see Swihart's signability questions knock him out of the first round. He's one of the elite talents in the class, and Boston is a club potentially willing to pay him what he wants.

Pick
20
Colorado Rockies
Player: Kolten Wong
Height: 6-9
Weight: 175
Hometown: Hilo, HI
Current Team: Hawaii
Position: 2B
Bats: L
Throws: R

General Manager: Dan O'Dowd
Scouting Director: Jon Weil

ANALYSIS: The rumors have been that Colorado prefers bats and that seems accurate according to most sources. In this scenario, Wong is the best collegiate bat on the board.

Pick
21
Toronto Blue Jays
Height: 6-2
Weight: 180
Hometown: Johnson City, TN
Current Team: Science Hill HS
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Alex Anthopoulos
Scouting Director: Andrew Tinnish

ANALYSIS: The Blue Jays are considering all options, but seem to be hoping to get their hands on one of the elite high school arms. They see Norris as belonging in that category.

Pick
22
St. Louis Cardinals
Player: Henry Owens
Height: 7-6
Weight: 195
Hometown: Huntington Beach, CA
Current Team: Edison HS
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: John Mozeliak
Scouting Director: Jeff Luhnow

ANALYSIS: St. Louis has been all over Henry Owens. They've given looks to Larry Greene, including a surprising number of prep arms. They love Owens' projection and unless someone takes a tumble from the top, expect Owens to be near the top of their short list.

Pick
23
Washington Nationals
Player: Alex Meyer
Height: 7-9
Weight: 220
Hometown: Greensburg, IN
Current Team: Kentucky
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Mike Rizzo
Scouting Director: Kris Kline

ANALYSIS: There's been consistent buzz about Meyer and the Nats. Taking him sixth is a bit risky and picking him here would be much more logical.

Pick
24
Tampa Bay Rays
Player: Joe Ross
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190
Hometown: Oakland,  CA
Current Team: Bishop O'Dowd HS
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Andrew Friedman
Scouting Director: R.J. Harrison

ANALYSIS: Tampa Bay is very likely to grab a prep arm with this pick and they could have a number of options, including Ross, Guerrieri, Fernandez, and others. They are ruling nothing out with all these picks.

Pick
25
San Diego Padres
Player: Andrew Susac
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205
Hometown: Roseville, CA
Current Team: Oregon State
Position: C
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Jed Hoyer
Scouting Director: Jaron Madison

ANALYSIS: San Diego is not likely to get their second crack at George Springer or Javier Baez. They still look to be leaning toward college with this pick and Susac is someone they covet, in spite of the injury this spring. Henry Owens, who is off the board in this scenario, is one of the prep arms that San Diego really likes as well.

Pick
26
Boston Red Sox
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185
Hometown: Cheyenne, WY
Current Team: East HS
Position: CF
Bats: L
Throws: R

General Manager: Theo Epstein
Scouting Director: Amiel Sawdaye

ANALYSIS: Recently sources have had the Red Sox all over Nimmo. Surprisingly he is finding a number of takers for his supposed high price tag, with Boston leading that charge. Josh Bell, as well as a number of high price tag players will be in play in this spot.

Pick
27
Cincinnati Reds
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195
Hometown: Moorpark, CA
Current Team: Florida State
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Walt Jocketty
Scouting Director: Chris Buckley

ANALYSIS: Cincinnati's scouting department had a large presence at the ACC tournament, and primarily were checking out Gilmartin and Levi Michael. In this scenario, Michael will be off the board. That scenario is looking much more likely as the UNC standout has a number of takers from the Mets, Marlins on down through the teens and 20s. They like signable and they like college arms. Gilmartin was solid in the tournament and may have put himself atop their list.

Pick
28
Atlanta Braves
Height: 6-3
Weight: 180
Hometown: Columbia, SC
Current Team: Spring Valley HS
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Frank Wren
Scouting Director: Tony DeMacio

ANALYSIS: Word is that Atlanta would prefer to take the best high school arm that falls into their lap. In this case, that arm is Guerrieri. Joe Ross, Michael Kelly, Robert Stephenson, Jose Fernandez could all be in play here. When we're talking about the Braves, we also can't rule out Georgia natives Dwight Smith Jr., Julius Gaines, or Larry Greene. Prep lefty Kevin Matthews has gotten interest from the Braves as well, but that's a big stretch for the first round.

Pick
29
San Francisco Giants
Player: Josh Osich
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225
Hometown: Boise,  ID
Current Team: Oregon State
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Brian Sabean
Scouting Director: John Barr

ANALYSIS: This one makes a ton of sense on a lot of levels. Osich is a power lefty, and the Giants had high ranking scouts in attendance for his no-hitter at UCLA. They will let things play out and likely take the best arm available here.

Pick
30
Minnesota Twins
Height: 6-4
Weight: 215
Hometown: Las Vegas, NV
Current Team: Oregon
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L

General Manager: Bill Smith
Scouting Director: Deron Johnson

ANALYSIS: The Twins are open to just about anything in this spot, but aren't likely to go over slot. There is plenty available for a reasonable price, and they've been high on Anderson throughout the spring.

Pick
31
Tampa Bay Rays
Height: 6-1
Weight: 190
Hometown: Rocky Mount, NC
Current Team: Miami Dade College
Position: OF
Bats: L
Throws: R

General Manager: Andrew Friedman
Scouting Director: R.J. Harrison

ANALYSIS: Tampa is going to do their best to get a diverse crop from this huge haul of picks. Goodwin fits their profile well, as he's a good athlete with a big upside. Just about every prep name out there has been associated with the Rays as well.

Pick
32
Tampa Bay Rays
Height: 6-0
Weight: 240
Hometown: Fort Myers, FL
Current Team: Bishop Verot HS
Position: 1B
Bats: L
Throws: R

General Manager: Andrew Friedman
Scouting Director: R.J. Harrison

ANALYSIS: Somewhere amongst all these Rays' picks they are going to cut some deals. This could happen with Daniel Vogelbach, a burly, powerful left-handed high school hitter. The Rays love the bat, despite his bad body and according to sources would grab him in the right scenario at this spot.

Pick
33
Texas Rangers
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215
Hometown: Aliso Viejo, CA
Current Team: Tustin HS
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R

General Manager: Jon Daniels
Scouting Director: Kip Fagg

ANALYSIS: Harrison fits everything the Rangers' scouting department is about. He's big, strong and athletic. And, of late he's been on the rise on many boards. Texas doesn't have a short list here because, quite frankly, there's no way to predict what will be available.
