Two of the biggest figures in the Oakland A's 2009 draft class were in the headlines on Sunday. Grant Green was in them for the right reasons, while Ian Krol found his name attached to a controversy of his own making.

Green Named MVP Of Futures Game

Grant Green's return trip to the MLB All-Star Futures Game was a successful one, as the A's top shortstop prospect and 2009 number one pick earned MVP honors. Green doubled twice in two at-bats and drove-in two runs. The US team beat the World team by a score of 6-4.

Green's first double was a line shot to left over the left-fielder's head that one-hopped the wall. The second was a booming blast to straight-away centerfield that hit high up on the tall wall at Chase Field in Phoenix. The blast would have left nearly every other major league park.

The 13th-overall pick in 2009 is currently bating .288 with a .350 OBP and a .401 SLG in 76 games for Double-A Midland.

Krol Suspended Indefinitely

The news wasn't so good on Sunday for fellow 2009 draft pick Ian Krol. Krol, who entered the season as the A's top pitching prospect, was suspended indefinitely by the A's for an inappropriate tweet Krol wrote that included inflammatory and derogatory comments. The tweet itself was directed towards unnamed students at Arizona State and included a gay slur. Krol had been committed to attend the University of Arizona before signing with the A's.

Krol, a native of Illinois, has spent the past four months in the Phoenix area. He was injured during the A's spring training and has been rehabbing at the A's minor league complex in Phoenix ever since. The A's complex is located only a few miles from the Arizona State campus.

The timing of the suspension is particularly unfortunate given that Krol is finally healthy and had tweeted earlier on Saturday that he was close to being sent out of Phoenix, presumably to join the High-A Stockton Ports. Krol had made three rehab starts for the A's Rookie League team and had yet to allow a base-runner in five innings. He had struck-out six. Krol is rehabbing a strained left forearm, a similar injury to the one that sidelined A's closer Andrew Bailey earlier this season.

Krol went 10-4 with a 2.80 ERA and a 111:28 K:BB ratio in 138.1 innings last season for Low-A Kane County and Stockton. He was the A's seventh-round pick in 2009 and he signed with Oakland to an above-slot, seven-figure deal. Krol would likely have been a top-two round pick that season had he not been suspended from his high school baseball team for his senior season. In that incident, Krol was suspended for being in the presence of others drinking alcohol, although he reportedly wasn't drinking.

Krol is 20-years-old.

Other News and Notes

Jeremy Barfield hit a grandslam, and Stephen Parker, Wes Timmons, Ryan Ortiz and Shane Peterson also connected on homeruns. Timmons had three hits and four RBIs to lead the 'Hounds.

- The Stockton Ports nearly blew an eight-run lead but managed to hold on to a 9-8 victory over the Modesto Nuts to split their four-game series. Stockton has now won 23 of 26 games. Tyson Ross got the rehab start for Stockton but the A's starter left the game after only one inning with an undisclosed injury. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk. James Simmons earned the win in relief with three shut-out innings. He struck-out five, walked none and allowed only one hit. Jose Guzman tossed two shut-out innings to earn the save. He struck-out five and walked two and now has 15 saves on the year. Conner Crumbliss, Dusty Coleman, Anthony Aliotti and Michael Gilmartin all homered for Stockton.

- Josh Whitaker extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-hit night for Low-A Burlington in the Bees' 7-5 loss to Kane County. Whitaker is batting .410 with a 1375 OPS and five homers and 17 RBIs during the streak. He has a 937 OPS for the season with a .316 average and 10 homeruns. - Daniel Petitti hit his first homerun of the season to help the AZL A's defeat the AZL Rangers, 7-5, on Sunday night. Petitti's three-run blast came as part of a five-run eighth inning that lifted the A's over the Rangers. Dusty Robinson had two outfield assists and reached base three times. Josh Leyland walked three times. The first-baseman turned 20 on July 6th and has a .400 OBP and an 847 OPS in his first 11 games this season. Leyland missed most of the last two seasons with injuries. Bobby Crocker also reached base three times. Andres Avila got the win with five solid innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.

- A's Dominican Summer League prospect Vicmal De La Cruz is batting .543 with a 1350 OPS over his last 10 games for the DSL A's. He is batting .351 with a .470 OBP and a .500 SLG on the season. De La Cruz signed for a six-figure bonus as an international amateur free agent last year.
