Weeks was all smiles on Thursday.

Jemile Weeks isn't going to be a home run hitter in the big leagues, but on Thursday, he did it all for the A's.

The rookie second baseman hit the first home run of his career, a solo shot to right in the sixth field off Colby Lewis, and he went 3-for-3 in Oakland's 4-3 victory over Texas.

Weeks also scored the winning run in the eighth on a single by Coco Crisp.

His .303 average leads the A's, and manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that were Weeks sitting right at .300 on the final day of the season, he would be tempted to sit him to preserve his average.

Except he knows that Weeks wouldn't let him.

"He wants to play every day," Melvin said.

Weeks was starting to get teased by his teammates about his zero home runs. They talked about bagels in the category, they told him they doubted he would hit one out.

Then they gave him the silent treatment in the dugout when he hit his home run Thursday, another joking sign of approval.

"Every day, I get something said about the home-run deal," Weeks said with a grin. "All in fun."

Melvin said that the home run put a little extra zip in Weeks' step Thursday, but now it's out of the way and he doesn't want to see Weeks trying to hit the ball out of the park.

That's not his game, as evidenced by the fact it took him 91 big-league games to do it, the second longest homerless streak to start a season for Oakland after Mike Bordick's 132-game homerless streak. Weeks homered 16 times in 221 minor league games, including three earlier this season for Triple-A Sacramento.
