2012 Draft Scouting Report: Carson Kelly

2012 Draft Scouting Report: Carson Kelly

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of an amateur career. As part of our 2012 draft coverage here at Scout.com, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look prep infielder, Carson Kelly.

Name: Carson Kelly
Position: Third Base
School: Westview H.S. (Ore.)
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 200
Bats/Throws: R/R

Events Scouted: PG National Showcase

Physical Description

Kelly is a plus athlete. He shows outstanding agility as well as decent foot speed. He's relatively physically mature but he will add some additional muscularity as a pro.

Hitting

Kelly's offensive upside stands out. He hits from a strong base and shows good balance at the plate. His bat speed is plus and he shows good extension out front. He looks like he'll be a good gap hitter at the next level, as he consistently squares the ball up. His plate discipline will need some improvement, but overall he's a very sound and high upside young hitter.

Power

The ball really leaps off Kelly's bat. He shows plus raw power before the game that someday will translate in game action. The raw strength is there, as is the plus bat speed. When his pitch selection improves, we could see a 20+ home run bat in the big leagues.

Fielding

Kelly has the plus and possibly plus-plus arm to the play third base at the next level. There's some inconsistencies in his defensive game, but he has the physical skills to play the position as a pro.

Speed

He's a good overall athlete but his speed is about average at this point. And, that's probably where he'll be for the duration of his career. He's already pretty physically mature. He does have a very good first step, though.

Summation

Kelly's profile is very enticing to scouts. He's potential plus hit tool, plus throwing arm athletic third baseman with some pop in his bat. And, for a high school player he's not all that raw. Someone will grab him in the top couple rounds.
