2012 Draft Scouting Report: Tom Murphy
Events Scouted: Team USA
Murphy is very solidly built and fits the profile of a professional catcher. He's also highly physically mature and this is the frame you're likely to see a few years down the road as well.
There are still some inconsistencies to Murphy's offensive approach. He's been exploited by off-speed pitches at times, but last summer he also showed stretches of being able to handle just about any offering. Murphy will have some growing pains as a pro, but the bat speed and swing mechanics are there for him to be a very good hitter at the next level.
The power in Murphy's bat is what has enticed scouts around baseball since last summer. He has great natural lift in his swing and he produces outstanding backspin. This is a potential 25 home run bat in the big leagues.
The arm and the agility are clearly there for Murphy to be a good professional catcher. But, his receiving skills are going to need to make some progress.
Given his frame and his position, it's a mild surprise that Murphy is a pretty decent runner. He's even flashed a step above average speed at times, but expect him to be around an average runner as a professional.
The 25 home run type catcher is a rare commodity. Murphy has a chance to be just that, and that's why he'll likely go off the board in the top two rounds.
