Scouting Notes: Brown Dazzles on the Cape
After working sparingly out of the bullpen for the majority of the summer, Brown made his first start on July 30th. He worked a solid five innings against Cotuit in that outing, but it seems that his most recent outing on Sunday evening was his coming out party.
Brown came right out of the gate showing off an impressive fastball. His first pitch of the game registered at 94 mph, and he went on to sit at 92-94 mph, consistently topping out at 95. He also only dipped below 92 once with the fastball. Most impressive, however, was the ease of Brown's fastball. His delivery was very under control and he had the appearance of a pitcher not really airing it out. His very strong lower half may have something to do with this.
On top of that plus fastball, Brown also flashed an above average breaking ball. A late breaking curveball at 82-84, you could debate that it's more a slider. Either way, it's a swing and miss offering that is going to miss a lot of bats at the next level.
It's simply going to be about control for Brown. His control was as good as it has been all summer on this night, but he does get into ruts where he'll lose his release point. When he's in the zone, however, he looks as lights out as any college pitcher in the nation. While he does show promise as a position player, it's going to be difficult to not keep him and his 95 mph fastball on the mound in the pros.
