Rangers Winterball Roundup – 10/31

Surprise Saguaros infielder Hanser Alberto, playing at DH on Wednesday, raised his AFL batting average to .378 with three singles in four at-bats. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 6 – Peoria 4
11-8-1

Five Rangers prospects appeared in Wednesday's Surprise victory, which pushed the club past Peoria and into the division's first-place spot.

Leadoff man and second baseman Luis Sardinas went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, bumping his Fall League average up to .310. He also committed a fielding error, his first of the fall.

DH Hanser Alberto, batting second, raised his batting average to .378 with three singles in four at-bats. He drove home two runs and stole his third base. Catcher Kellin Deglan went 1-for-4 at the plate and gunned down both of Peoria's attempted base stealers.

Saguaros starting pitcher Ben Henry yielded three runs on six hits in two innings during his second AFL start. Throwing 26 of his 41 pitches for a strike, Henry didn't have a walk or a strikeout.

Lefty reliever Jimmy Reyes gave up an unearned run in the fifth inning, though he didn't permit a hit or a walk.

Dominican Winter League

Leury Garcia got the start at third base for the Gigantes del Cibao on Wednesday. The switch-hitting speedster singled once in four at-bats and played errorless ball in the field.

Although Garcia hasn't played third base in state-side professional ball, he could profile as something of a super-utility player down the line. The prospect spent most of his time at shortstop and second base this past season, but he also saw a little action in center field.

Licey centerfielder Leonys Martin (0/3, BB), right fielder Mike Olt (0/3, BB) and left fielder Engel Beltre (0/3) all went hitless in three official at-bats. Martin and Olt both walked once. Martin also stole his fourth base.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aguilas del Zulia starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan hurled five innings of three-hit shutout ball, walking one and striking out five. The 23-year-old hurler has yet to allow a run in 17.2 innings over four winterball starts.

Boscan's stat-line in those four starts––17.2 ip, 10 h, 0 r, 5 bb, 13 k.

Lara's Guilder Rodriguez, recently re-signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers, entered as a defensive replacement in center field and went 1-for-3. An infielder by trade, Rodriguez has played all around the diamond for the Cardenales during the last few winterball campaigns.

La Guaira reliever Arlett Mavare fanned two and walked one in a blank eighth inning.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

A trio of Rangers prospects for Caracas––first baseman Tomas Telis, shortstop Edwin Garcia, and second baseman Santiago Chirino–-contributed five total hits on Wednesday.

Telis went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Garcia was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Chirino went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Telis and Garcia both stole a base, as well.

Magallanes DH Elio Castillo had a single and two strikeouts in four at-bats.

Pinch-hitter and centerfielder Alex Gonzalez, playing for La Guaira, singled once in two trips. He was also caught stealing.

Jhonny Gomez was 1-for-4 for the Tiburones.

Aragua right fielder Teodoro Martinez, batting ninth, went 1-for-4 while also committing a fielding error.

Mexican Pacific League

Algodoneros de Guasave catcher Jose Felix raised his batting average to .368 in the young winterball season with two singles in four trips. He also knocked in a run.

Mazatlan's Joey Butler, who's fallen to the eight-hole in the batting order after his recent slump, went 0-for-3, dropping his average to .211. The right fielder also committed a fielding error.

Puerto Rican Winter League
