Phillies pick Brundage to take over IronPigs

With Ryne Sandberg headed to bigger and better things in Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs were in need of a new manager. The Phillies replaced Sandberg with Dave Brundage, a veteran minor league manager.

Dave Brundage spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues as a player and has eclipsed that as a manager, entering his 16th season leading a minor league club when he takes over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Brundage's latest assignment was at the helm of the Gwinnett Braves, who finished 62-82 on the season. The down year ended a streak of three straight winning seasons for Brundage with the G-Braves, during which he went 231-198 and led the team to a playoff spot in 2009.

As a player, Brundage was originally drafted by the Phillies in the fourth round of the 1986 Draft and spent two seasons in the Phillies minor league system, reaching as high as AA Reading. In December of 1987, Brundage was packaged with pitcher Mike Jackson and outfielder Glenn Wilson and traded to Seattle for outfielder Phil Bradley and pitcher Tim Fortugno.

Brundage spent 11 seasons in the Mariners minor league organization before retiring as a player following the 1994 season. Initially drafted as a first baseman and outfielder, Brundage found himself on the mound in emergency situations 17 times between 1988 and 1993, including making a start for AAA Calgary in 1993.

In his final season, Brundage pitched in 24 games in relief, going 1-4, 2.96 with three saves.

Brundage finished his playing career having never reached the majors. In 13 minor league seasons, he hit 16-261-.275/.383/.359 in just under 3,000 plate appearances. He also finished with a pitching line of 1-5, 3.83 in 41 minor league games. Recommended Stories
