Phils grab speedy outfielder in Rule 5 Draft

The Phillies are in desperate need of outfielders and while he doesn't really fill a hole, Ender Inciarte does have a chance to stick with the Phillies in 2013. The team also added a left-handed reliever in the minor league phase.

Ender Inciarte; who?

He's the newest Phillie and will fight to keep a roster spot on the Phillies roster for all of 2013. The fact that the Phillies don't have anyone that's a sure thing for their outfield in 2013 would seem to bode well for the 22-year old out of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

Inciarte signed with the Diamondbacks as an international free agent in 2008 and made his debut in the U.S. the following season. At 5'11", 160 pounds, Inciarte will never be the biggest guy on the field, but he's put up some nice numbers climbing through the Arizona organization.

In five minor league seasons - including the Dominican Summer League in 2008 - Inciarte is a .283 hitter with a .347 on-base percentage. He's got good speed and has stolen 111 bases, with success on 72% of his attempts.

Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports has heard some scouts compare Inciarte to Gerardo Parra, who has put up some decent numbers for the D'backs. Sounds like Inciarte has more speed though.

The Phillies also added a left-handed reliever in the minor league portion of the draft.

Brendan Lafferty, 26, comes out of the Royals organization and pitched at Double-A Northwest Arkansas for the last season-and-a-half.

Since he was taken in the minor league portion of the draft, the Phillies are under no requirement to keep him on the major league roster.

Lafferty went 1-1 with a 4.77 ERA in 43 games last season, but has a career ERA of 3.80 in four minor league seasons. The Royals drafted Lafferty out of UCLA in the 18th round of the 2009 Draft.

The Phillies would have to consider the draft a success, since they were able to find two players who could fit nicely into the organization and also because they didn't lose any players to other teams.
