A's Take Overton With Second Pick

Overton was OU's top starter entering this year.

With their second pick in the 2013 draft, the Oakland A's took Oklahoma University left-hander Dillon Overton. Overton is the second OU pitcher to be taken on day one of the draft.

As a rotation-mate of top draft prospect Jonathan Gray, Dillon Overton received plenty of exposure to scouts during his junior season for the Sooners. According to Scout.com MLB Draft expert Kiley McDaniel, Overton came into this season arguably ranked higher than Gray, but a mid-season injury caused him to fall back some in the draft rankings.

Overton is a thin, 6'2'' southpaw who missed two weeks during the 2013 season with a left forearm strain. He went 9-2 with a 2.91 ERA and two complete games (including one shutout) for the Sooners this season. Overton struck-out 76 and walked 22 in 86.2 innings.

In past years, Overton's fastball has touched 95 while mostly sitting in the low-90s, but this year he was more 89-91. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Overton also throws a breaking ball and a change-up. He gets high marks for his pitchability and his toughness on the mound.

"He had first-round buzz entering the year," McDaniel said. "Injury issues and a cross-fire delivery contributed to his stuff being down this year. He projects as a number four starter, but he has flashed the ability to be better. You just don't know if [that level of stuff] will come back."

Overton's collegiate career has been covered extensively by Scout.com's SoonersIllustrated. For access to all of the articles about Overton (including several video interviews), click here.
