A's Notes: Cook Activated; Scribner Optioned

The Oakland A's activated set-up man Ryan Cook from the 15-day disabled list on Monday, in time for the A's first game with the Minnesota Twins. Cook made two rehab appearances with the High-A Stockton Ports and was deemed healthy. He suffered a shoulder injury early in spring training and didn't appear in any major league spring games as a result.

To make room for Cook on the A's 25-man roster, Oakland sent right-hander Evan Scribner down to Sacramento. That the A's had the ability to option Scribner to Triple-A came as somewhat of a surprise. He was thought to be out-of-options, but it turns out an option was never used for Scribner in 2012. The A's bullpen depth is definitely stronger with Scribner available in Triple-A. He has thrown 1.1 scoreless innings for the A's thus far this year.

Cook joins an A's bullpen that has allowed seven earned runs in 21 innings thus far this season. Five of those seven runs have been allowed by A's closer Jim Johnson.

This is the second time in a week the A's have been able to add someone to their Triple-A roster that it was presumed they would lose if they didn't keep the player on their 25-man roster. Late last week, outfielder Michael Taylor surprisingly cleared waivers, allowing the A's to outright him to Sacramento. The A's depth in both the bullpen and the outfield is now significantly increased with the additions of Taylor and Scribner to the Sacramento roster.

The A's will have to make another roster decision soon, as outfielder Craig Gentry is expected to be activated off of the DL in a few days. He is currently rehabbing in the minor leagues. He went 2-for-4 in a game for Stockton on Saturday.

In other news around the organization, top A's prospect Addison Russell was placed on the Midland Rockhounds' seven-day DL with a hamstring strain.
