A's Re-Acquire Marks From Kansas City

Justin Marks made his ML debut this year.

While the MLB Draft is dominating the headlines, the Oakland A's made another move on Friday, re-acquiring left-hander Justin Marks from the Kansas City Royals. Marks was the A's 2009 third-round pick and was traded to Kansas City by Oakland before the 2011 season.

On a day when the Oakland A's are welcoming several new faces into their organization, Oakland re-acquired a familiar face in southpaw Justin Marks. Oakland announced the transaction on Friday morning. Marks was acquired for cash considerations and added to the A's 40-man roster. A corresponding move to the 40-man roster will be announced later today. UPDATE: The A's designated OF Kent Matthes for assignment.

Marks was the A's third-round pick in 2009. He was the A's second overall pick that season behind infielder Grant Green.

Injuries impacted Marks' career early with the A's and he struggled at the start of his first full professional season in 2010. He improved as the season went on, however, and was considered a prospect on the rise when he was traded along with Vin Mazzaro for outfielder David DeJesus before the 2011 season.

Marks' career took off with Kansas City. He struck-out a Carolina League-best 140 batters in in 148 innings in 2011. In 2012, Marks missed some time with injury, but he still struck-out 73 in 85.1 innings at the Double-A level. Last season, Marks spent most of the season with Triple-A Omaha, where he struck-out 129 and posted a 4.58 ERA in 129.2 innings. He also had two outings for Northwest Arkansas.

Marks made his major-league debut for Kansas City on April 20 in a two-inning relief appearance against Minnesota. Marks allowed four hits and three walks and three runs. He struck-out two. Marks has a 5.64 ERA in 13 appearances with Triple-A Omaha, 11 of those coming in relief. He has 27 strike-outs in 30.1 innings.

Marks was designated for assignment by the Royals on June 2nd. He has been optioned to Sacramento.
