A’s Win Competitive Balance Pick

Shutout last year, the Oakland A’s won an extra draft pick in this year’s competitive balance lottery. The A’s won the second pick of Round B, which takes place between Rounds 2 and 3 of next year’s draft. Competitive Balance draft picks are the only picks that can be traded. The picks must be traded during a regular season.


Marincov Continues Hot Streak

Beloit Snappers’ OF Tyler Marincov hit his fourth homerun in his last eight games and helped spark a late-game rally for the Snappers in their 6-1 win over Fort Worth. All six runs were scored in the eighth and ninth innings. Marincov has 13 homers on the season and his OPS is up to 791. After struggling in June, he is batting .328 with a 1098 OPS in July.

DH Ryan Mathews also homered, his seventh of the year. OF B.J. Boyd reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Mathews, Boyd, Phil Pohl and Luis Baez each had two hits.


Lake Monsters Mount Big Comeback

Down 5-0 in the first, the Vermont Lake Monsters stormed back to earn an 8-6 win. Vermont collected 17 hits. John Nogowski had four hits, including a double. Scott Masik had three hits and scored two runs, while J.P. Sportman, Joe Bennie and Ben McQuown each had two hits. The hits for Sportman were his first since being promoted to Vermont.

Dominique Vattuone earned the save with three shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and he struck-out two.


RockHounds Fall Late

Texas Rangers’ prospect Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and hand Midland a 5-3 loss. Midland walked 11 times and had six hits but they managed only three runs. Max Muncy and Dusty Coleman each had two hits. In his Double-A debut, Bruce Maxwell had an RBI groundout and went 0-for-5. Beau Taylor was sent down to High-A Stockton to make room for Maxwell on the Midland roster.


Overton Solid Again

A’s 2013 second-round pick Dillon Overton had another strong outing for the AZL A’s. The left-hander allowed a run on three hits and a walk in three innings. He struck-out four. He now has a 28:3 K:BB in 19 innings for the AZL A’s. Overton is working his way back from Tommy John surgery.


River Cats Lose Big In El Paso

El Paso jumped all over the Sacramento pitching staff on Wednesday, en route to a 16-7 win. Matt Buschmann, Tucker Healy, Seth Frankoff and Fernando Rodriguez allowed 16 runs on 16 hits and six walks. Sacramento had 11 hits, including three hits from Jake Elmore and two hits from Shane Peterson, Josh Whitaker and Nick Buss. Peterson hit his 30th double of the season. He is now batting .322. His OPS is 860.
