Redman, Set, Go: A's Silence Red-Hot Cubs
In his first start back from the DL, Sammy Sosa finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Sosa struck out swinging in the first inning to strand catcher Michael Barrett at third.
The Cubs' lone run of the day came on Ramon Martinez' RBI single to left in the fifth inning. Derrek Lee had singled with one out and managed to slide home safely when Bobby Kielty's throw to the plate caught the Cubs first baseman in the left buttocks.
Chad Bradford worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning in relief of Redman, getting Sosa to ground out to end the game. Francis Beltran pitched the ninth for the Cubs, walking two but not allowing any runs to score.
NOTES: The Cubs optioned OF Jason Dubois back to AAA-Iowa before the game to free up roster space for Sosa. Actor William Peterson of the CBS hit series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation led the Wrigley crowd of 40,000+ in the singing of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
