AFL Notebook: Perry Powers Up, Street Perfect
Perry's two-run homerun was his third of the AFL season. He also added his second double in going 2-4. Perry raised his batting average to .323 and has opened a lot of eyes by posting a .677 SLG. If his performance continues to be at this high level, look for the A's to add Perry to the 40-man roster -- or they may risk losing him in the Rule V draft.
Street also had a strong game, throwing one scoreless inning, striking out a batter. The former University of Texas closer has now tossed 7.2 innings, allowing only one run and seven hits. He has not walked a batter and has struck out eight. His ERA now stands at 1.17 and he has converted all three of his save opportunities.
Tuesday was an otherwise quiet day for the A's prospects. Omar Quintanilla went 0-3 and committed his fourth error at shortstop. He is now hitting .269. John Baker was a late-game defensive replacement at catcher and did not bat. Baker has had only one at-bat in the last two AFL contests. He made his first appearance at first base on Monday. Jeremy Brown did not play on Tuesday. Brown is part of the taxi squad and can only play twice a week.
Winter League Notes A few of the winter leagues have already started play and some of the A's prospects have suited up for their teams. Dan Johnson, A's Organizational Player of the Year and PCL MVP, is playing in the Mexican League along with fellow RiverCats Matt Watson and Mario Ramos. Johnson, who is playing himself back into playing shape after missing the last two weeks of the season with vertigo, is hitting .250 with three RBI in five games for Hermosillo. Watson, who has been playing all three outfield positions, is hitting .190 with 5 RBI and a homerun in five games. Ramos had a strong start against Hermosillo on Tuesday, going seven innings. He allowed only two runs on five hits and he struck out six. Ramos is suiting up for Mochis.
