The Phoenix Desert Dogs dominated in the Arizona desert last season and they are well on their way…
Oakland A's Fall and Winter League Notebook
Andre Ethier – Ethier has continued to impress at the plate this week. With two three-walk games in a week's time, Ethier is quickly earning a reputation for a discerning batter's eye. In 14 games, Ethier has scratched out an amazing 16 walks and he has struck out only four times. He has also added 17 hits in 45 at-bats (.378 batting average) and a .622 slugging percentage. He leads the Desert Dogs in RBIs and is first on the team in hitting amongst hitters who have had at least 30 at-bats.
Daric Barton – Barton has not fared as well as his Midland Rockhounds' teammate. The 20-year old had a rough week as he watched his batting average plummet 70 points down to .256. However, he hasn't let his hitting slump affect his batting eye. Barton still sports an impressive .411 on-base percentage and he has walked 11 times against 10 strikeouts.
Kurt Suzuki – On a team with three catchers, Suzuki has found himself on the short-end of the stick for playing time thus far this AFL season. He should see more time as the season gets longer. He has had 18 official at-bats in seven games and has a .278/.391/.444 line with five RBIs.
Shane Komine – Komine has been the Desert Dogs' best pitcher thus far. In three starts, Komine has allowed only two earned runs in 13.2 innings of work. He has 13 strikeouts and has walked only one batter. He has also allowed only 15 hits, which is impressive considering the explosiveness of the AFL offenses.
Matt Lynch and Shawn Kohn – This A's minor league relief tandem has struggled this fall. Lynch and Kohn have been inconsistent and have both found their ERAs in the mid-6.00s. Kohn has shown his trademark control, walking only one batter in eight innings of work, but he has allowed 11 hits and six earned runs. Lynch has allowed 13 base-runners in 8.1 innings (three walks and 10 hits), although he has struck out eight batters.
Marcus McBeth – McBeth was a recent addition to the Desert Dogs' roster. The A's minor league outfielder-turned-relief pitcher has made one appearance thus far. He allowed one run in one innings of work and didn't walk or strikeout a batter. During the regular season, McBeth made 16 appearances for the Kane County Cougars (5.30 ERA), two scoreless appearance for the Stockton Ports and eight appearances for the A's Rookie League team (0.90 ERA).
Winter League Updates:
Javier Herrera – After a fast start in the Venezuelan League, Herrera has cooled a bit at the plate for the Leones. In nine games, the powerful outfielder is hitting .292 with an 862 OPS and two stolen bases. He has one homerun and four RBI.
Jairo Garcia – The hard-throwing relief prospect is playing for the Leones del Escogido in his home country, the Dominican Republic. Thus far, Garcia has made three appearances, completing three innings. He has allowed one run on two hits and a walk. He has struck out one batter.
The following Oakland A's minor league players have elected to become six-year minor league free agents:
C: Thomas Gregorio
IF: Andrew Beattie, Adam Morrissey, Francis Gomez, Bobby Smith.
OF: Jack Cust, Jose Pineda, Shawn Garrett.
P: Keith Dunn, Evan Fahrner, Britt Reames, Adam Johnson, Nick Mattioni, Brigmer Leon, Mike Nannini, Alex Santos, Manuel Rodriguez, Mike Saipe, Andrew Shibilo, Victor Moreno.
The following players have been dropped from the A's 40-man roster and are now free agents:
P: Ryan Glynn, Seth Etherton, Keiichi Yabu
C: Alberto Castillo
Note that IF Keith Ginter has been designated for assignment, which means that he is no longer on the A's 40-man roster, although no decision has been made as of yet whether or not he will elect free agency.
