We have a look at the notable performances around the Oakland A's minor league system for the week of 5/15-5/21:

Sacramento River Cats

Season Record: 20-23

Notable Performances for the Week of 5/15-5/21:

Jeremy Brown: 4-14, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K. Brown’s return to AAA was a strong one. After a week on the Oakland A’s bench, Brown homered in his second at-bat back with Sacramento and added two more on Sunday. He has the Sacramento team lead with six homers on the year and is hitting .325.

John Birtwell: 3 G, 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Birtwell has been a boon to the Sacramento bullpen since arriving from Stockton on May 6. The Harvard alum and minor league free agent signee has thrown nine scoreless innings for Sacramento and is holding opposing batters to a .133 BAA.

Shawn Kohn: 2 G, 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. After a disastrous first outing on May 12, Kohn has been a solid member of the River Cats’ bullpen. Kohn held batters to a .182 BAA in 15.1 innings for Midland and he struck out 20 and walked only two for the Rockhounds before his promotion.

Mike Rouse: 7-22, 2 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K. Rouse is in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak, during which he has raised his batting average from .269 to .277.

Daric Barton: 3-20, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K. Barton has been mired in a May-long slump that has seen his average drop from .329 to .262. He still has more walks then strikeouts (31:25) and has 22 RBI in 41 games.

Jason Perry: 1-17, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 7 K. Perry has had a tough adjustment to AAA since his May 13 promotion. He has had only one hit in his first 26 at-bats. However, the one hit was a big one, a two-run homer against New Orleans.

Midland Rockhounds

Season Record: 24-19

Notable Performances for the Week of 5/15-5/21:

Ben Fritz: 2 GS, 14 IP, 11 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 2 BB, 10 K. Fritz was outstanding for Midland this week, although he was stuck with two tough no-decisions for his work. Fritz has a 2.05 ERA in four May starts, and he has lowered his ERA from 4.33 to 3.21. The Tommy John surgery survivor and former Moneyball pick has held hitters to a .235 BAA and has allowed only three homers in 53.1 innings.

Travis Buck: 10-29, 2 R, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 8 K, 2 SB. Buck has yet to find a professional level that he has struggled at. The left-fielder is hitting .324 in his first nine games for the Rockhounds and he leads all of the minor leagues in doubles with 22.

Vasili Spanos: 10-28, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K. Spanos has a six-game hitting streak, during which he has had four multi-hit games. He has his average back above .300 at .304 and he leads the team in homers with seven. Spanos is hitting .314 in May. He is hitting .433 against left-handers.

Matt Allegra: 7-24, 4 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 SB. Allegra returned from injury this week and had a productive week at the plate. He had a walk-off homer on Sunday and brought his average back above .300 at .308. He still is striking out too much, but when he makes contact, it has generally been right on the screws.

Justin Crowder: 2 G, 1 W, 1 SV, 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The left-handed reliever has allowed only one run in May and has a 19:4 K:BB ratio this season. Crowder’s ERA in May is a sparkling 1.04.

Ray Aguilar: 1 GS, 1 W, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K. Aguilar has been consistently good this season. He has allowed more than two runs in only two of his eight starts this season and he has a 3.24 ERA for the year.

Brad Knox: 2 GS, 1 W, 14.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 1 HR, 2 BB, 3 K. Knox has turned his season around and he put together his two longest outings of the season this week. He went 6.2 innings in his first outing and then went eight strong in his second appearance. He has a 3.47 ERA in May after posting an 8.84 ERA in April.

Stockton Ports

Season Record: 20-23

Notable Performances for the Week of 5/15-5/21:

David Castillo: 5-15, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RB, 2 BB, 1 K. Castillo returned to Stockton after a week on the Sacramento roster and he raised his average 44 points to .244. Castillo got a little extra playing time at the end of the week filling in for Landon Powell, who was knocked out with a shoulder strain after a collision at the plate.

Tommy Everidge: 7-19, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K. After a slow start this season, Everidge has picked up his game in May and is now one of the Ports’ top offensive players. He is hitting .345 with three homers and 16 RBI in 16 games in May.

Mike Mitchell: 2 G, 2 SV, 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Mitchell has been a stalwart in the Ports’ bullpen, allowing only five earned runs in 22 innings pitched this season. He is holding batters to a .220 BAA and has walked only four batters while striking out 21. He has a 1.86 ERA in May.

Hiram Bocachica: 4-14, 3 R, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 4 K. Bocachica returned from extended spring training and he saw his first in-game action of the season after spring training wrist surgery. He had a productive week, which ended in a scary fashion when he left a game early after a hit-by-pitch on Saturday. Bocachica is fine. According to the Sacramento Bee, he will be heading to AAA-Sacramento to bolster the River Cats roster on Monday.

Richie Robnett: 5-24, 4 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 11 K, 1 SB. Robnett’s week started off with a bang when he hit his fifth homerun and drove-in four for the second straight day. He cooled off the rest of the week, however. Robnett has yo-yoed this season between good and bad performances, mostly between home and the road. He is hitting only .174 with 31 strikeouts versus seven walks at home. However, he is hitting .391 with 11 walks and only 15 strikeouts on the road. In May, Robnett is hitting .275 with five extra-base hits in 17 games.

Kane County Cougars

Season Record: 25-18

Notable Performances for the Week of 5/15-5/21:

Steve Kleen: 8-18, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 6 K. Kleen broke out of a slump this week and raised his average from .275 to .295. He hasn’t hit for much power this season (only seven extra-base hits in 41 games), but he has collected 44 hits on the season. His four hits on Sunday were a season-high and he has a four-game hitting streak.

Jeff Baisley: 7-22, 3 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 SB. Baisley leads the A’s minor league system with eight homers. He is hitting .333 in May and he has a 20:28 BB:K ratio for the season. Baisley is hitting .286 on the season and he could be in-line for a promotion to A-Stockton later this season if/when a roster spot opens up.

Mike Massaro: 8-28, 4 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K. Massaro has been a sparkplug at the top of the Cougars’ order this season. He is hitting an even .300 out of the lead-off spot for Kane County and he has a 16:12 BB:K ratio this season.

T.J. Franco: 4 G, 1 W, 2 SV, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Franco had a busy week for Kane County. He won a game on Thursday and then posted back-to-back saves on Saturday and Sunday. Franco has allowed only three runs in 9.2 inning pitched since arriving from extended spring training on May 8.

Jared Lansford: 1 GS, 1 W, 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. Lansford followed up his no-hitter with another outstanding outing on Friday. He has allowed only eight hits in 23 innings this season and is holding batters to a ridiculous .111 BAA.

Vince Mazzaro: 2 GS, 1 W, 1 L, 9.1 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 4 K. It was a tale of two starts for Mazzaro this week. His first start was a real struggle, as he lasted only 2.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks. Mazzaro recovered on Saturday to toss seven shut-out innings in his best start of the season. He struck out four and walked one in that start. Mazzaro has been inconsistent this season, but has shown strong flashes of promise.
