Oakland A's MLN: Cougars Advance; Ports Out
Cougars Advance With Wild Win The Cougars used a familiar offensive outburst from Midwest League MVP Jeff Baisley and a walking clinic by 2006 draft choice Matt Sulentic to power past the Quad Cities Swing by a score of 10-7. With the win, the Cougars will be heading to the Division Championship Series, which begins tonight against Beloit. Baisley, who set a Cougars record for RBIs this season, drove-in four runs, three of which came on a long three-run homer which helped give the Cougars an early 9-1 advantage. Their bullpen allowed the Swing to chip away at the lead a bit, but Kane County was never in any real danger of losing. Sulentic, who struggled at low-A after ripping through short-season A pitching, walked four times and drove in two runs with his one hit of the game to help the Cougars advance. Chad Boyd, Frank Martinez, Raul Padron and Jose Pineda all had two hits, as the Cougars drew nine walks and had 17 hits. Boyd reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Joe Piekarz earned the win with six innings of work. He allowed four runs on nine hits. Joe Newby, Braden Dewing and Rob Semerano combined to close out the game. Stockton Loses Lead Late; Ends Season The Ports held a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning of their decisive Game Three against Visalia, but were unable to hold the lead, as the Oaks exploded for six in the eighth to end the Ports season. Mike Madsen turned in a stellar performance for Stockton in the losing effort. He went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out six. Brad Davis pitched a scoreless two-thirds of an inning and the Ports were two innings away from advancing. Unfortunately, Jeff Gray couldn't hold the lead, as he allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) in the eighth. Eddie Cornejo paced the Ports' offense with a 2-4 outing. He had a double and two RBI. Luis Perez and Gregorio Petit drove-in the other runs for Stockton.
