Kevin Melillo had a rough fall season for the Phoenix Desert Dogs, but he ended the regular season on an up note with a 2-4 performance against the Grand Canyon Rafters, whom Phoenix will take on in the title game. Melillo homered and singled, upping his AFL average to .245.
The homer was Melillo's second of the AFL season and his first since his first at-bat of the fall. Melillo went seven for his last 17 to finish the AFL regular season on a bit of a roll.
Landon Powell was the only other A’s prospect to appear in Thursday’s seven-inning Phoenix win over Grand Canyon. He entered as a pinch-runner and scored a run. Powell later lined out in his only at-bat. He struggled at the plate this fall, finishing with a .170 batting average and 12 strikeouts in 52 at-bats. He did walk nine times.
Phoenix will be returning to the AFL title game for the third straight season. The Desert Dogs have been the champions each of the last two seasons. The game will take place at noon Pacific time on Saturday.
Sacramento manager Tony DeFrancesco will be guiding a team playing for a ring that has included A’s prospects Jared Burton, Connor Robertson, Marcus McBeth, Mike Mitchell, Melillo, Powell, Travis Buck and Richie Robnett.
