The Toros del Este are having a rough season in the DWL. They are 14 games out of first place and well below .500. Their offense is hitting a meager .239 with a .310 on-base percentage. One can only imagine how bad those numbers would look if Daric Barton were not hitting third for the team.
The A's first base prospect has been on fire since coming to the Dominican Republic. In 63 at-bats, Barton is batting .333 with a staggering .463 on-base percentage. He has 17 walks (against only nine strikeouts), which ties him with former A's prospect Esteban German for the most on the team, although German has played in seven more games. Barton has also scored nine runs and has driven-in eight. He hasn't hit for much power yet (two doubles), but it appears there is nothing wrong with his batting eye and line-drive swing.
Barton's teammate and fellow A's prospect Jason Perry has had a rougher go of things in the DWL. He hasn't played much lately and is only four-for-33 with 17 strikeouts and only two walks. He has driven-in six runs.
Another A's prospect, Santiago Casilla, has struggled this winter, as well. Casilla, who starred for Escogido last season, has made eight appearances but has managed only 3.2 innings of work. He has allowed six hits, four runs and has walked six during that stretch. He has struck out four, however. Casilla is working his way back into playing shape after missing the last three months of the season with a strained shoulder.
Venezuelan Winter League
Charles Thomas got off to a bit of a slow start in Venezuela, but he has made up for lost time. The Sacramento centerfielder has brought his average up to .309 and his OPS up to 829. He has scored 15 runs in 27 games and he has a homer and 17 RBI. He has also walked 13 times against 15 strikeouts and has six stolen bases for the Tiburones.
For Caracas, Marco Scutaro is providing his annual star performance. The A's middle infielder is batting a red-hot .368 and his OPS is 974. He has scored 22 runs in 25 games and has nine extra-base hits. He has also walked more than he has struck out (16:15) and has driven-in 12 runs.
A's middle infield prospect Gregorio Petit is hitting well again after a bit of a mid-season slump. The slick fielding prospect has a .277 batting average in 65 at-bats for Caracas. This is his first full season in the Venezuelan Winter Leagues as a regular contributor.
Puerto Rican Winter League
A's lefty prospect Dallas Braden has made four appearances for Mayaguez this season, two of them starts. In total, he has logged only 8.1 innings over those four appearances. He has a 3.24 ERA, having allowed six hits and three earned runs. Two of those hits were homeruns. He has walked four and struck out 12.
A's outfielder Hiram Bocachica is off to a bit of a slow start for his hometown Leones de Ponce. Bocachica is hitting .200 in 10 games, with four RBI. Three of his seven hits have gone for doubles, however, and he has scored four runs. He has walked five times and has struck out nine times.
Mexican Winter League
Richie Robnett's winter season for Mazatlan has come to an end. The outfielder was sent home after a nine game stint where he hit .179 with 14 strikeouts. He did walk seven times, but the Venados are gearing up for the playoffs and decided to turn to a Mexican League veteran, Chris Latham, to take Robnett's place. It is common for young prospects who struggle to be released from their teams in favor of veterans as the playoffs draw near in the Mexican Leagues. It also appears Robnett was fighting a minor injury, although the nature of the injury wasn't disclosed in the Mexican press.
