Oakland A's Future Roster Crunch
Before this winter's rule change, if a player was drafted out of a four-year college, he could be left off of a team's 40-man roster for three seasons after he was drafted (including the season during which he was drafted). After three seasons, if that player wasn't placed on a 40-man roster, he was eligible to be drafted in the annual Rule 5 draft. For players drafted out of two-year colleges or high school, the rule was four seasons (including the season during which the player was drafted). This past winter, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players' Association signed a new collective bargaining agreement. One of the most significant changes included in the new agreement was that an extra season was added before players needed to be put on the 40-man roster or be left eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
