Oakland A's MLN: Pitcher-Perfect

Deal threw a complete-game gem.

Monday was a good day for pitchers in the Oakland A's system. Three of the A's affiliates received strong starting pitching performances. We have the details inside...

Deal Throws Complete Game Gem

Kane County starter Scott Deal threw the Cougars' first complete game since 2005, as Kane County crushed Burlington by a score of 11-2. Deal set a career-high with nine innings of outstanding pitching. He allowed only one earned run, while scattering nine hits and no walks. He struck out two. The win was Deal's fourth of the season and it lowered his ERA to 4.13.

Deal had plenty of offensive support from his teammates. Haas Pratt crushed two homeruns, a career-best for him. He now has six homers on the season. Greg Dowling also connected for his sixth homer and he had three hits. Jermaine Mitchell, Mike Massaro and Samuel Hernandez added mutli-hit games for the Cougars.

Martinez Leads Canadians To Another Win

Vancouver is off to a terrific start this season and their starting pitching is a big reason why. On Sunday, the Canadians received seven no-hit innings from Jose Guzman. On Monday, Vancouver received six strong innings from Leonardo Martinez in the C's 3-1 win over Yakima. It was the lefty's second strong start of the season. Martinez allowed only four hits and one run in six innings. He struck out six and walked none. He has a 1.50 ERA in two starts.

Reliever Bryan Collins threw two scoreless innings in his season debut and Leonardo Espinal collected his third save with a perfect ninth. The Canadians are now 6-1 to start the season.

Lead-off hitter J.D. Pruitt reached base twice again on Monday, once on a hit by pitch and once on a single. Matt Sulentic had two hits and Sean Doolittle had a double and two RBI.

Webb Back On Track With Solid Win

After a stretch of rough starts that started with a mid-May promotion to Double-A Midland went through a June 15 start for Stockton, Ryan Webb got back to the form that earned him a promotion from Double-A Midland earlier this season. Webb, who was sent back to Stockton in mid-June, worked seven strong innings in the Ports' 6-1 win over Visalia. Webb scattered four hits and allowed only a solo homerun. He struck out five and walked one, earning his fourth win of the season. Jeff Muessig and Branden Dewing combined to finish off the final two innings to secure the win.

Chad Boyd (4) and Tom Everidge (13) homered for Stockton, which moved to 4-1 to start the second half of the season. Boyd and Everidge each had three RBI to account for all of the Ports' runs. Lloyd Turner had two hits and Jose Pineda had three hits.

Sacramento Loses In Slug-Fest

There was one poor pitching performance in the A's system on Monday, and it was no surprise that it came in the offensive haven that is Salt Lake. Starter Mario Ramos was rocked, as the River Cats lost to the Bees by a score of 16-11.

Ramos allowed six runs in four innings and the Sacramento pitching staff combined to allow five Salt Lake homeruns. The River Cats' offense did its best to make it a contest. Jeremy Brown hit his sixth homer of the season and had three hits, while Daric Barton extended his hitting streak to 20-games with a 2-3 effort. It was his 10th straight multi-hit game.

Nick Blasi, who entered the game for Chris Snelling after Snelling had two at-bats, went 2-3 with two runs scored. Dee Brown and Jason Perry also added two hits. Gregorio Petit and Snelling were the only River Cats' to have a plate appearance who didn't score at least one run.
