Jay Marshall has been stuck in a revolving door on and off of the Oakland A's roster this off-season…
A's Re-Claim Marshall; DFA Jose Garcia
Marshall, a submarine left-hander, appeared in 51 games for Oakland in 2007. He had a 6.43 ERA, but he allowed only 16.7 percent of inherited runners to score. He struck out 18 and walked 22 in 42 innings.
The A's had originally planned to use Marshall exclusively as a left-handed relief specialist, but his early success against right-handers led the team to use him in more full-inning situations. Eventually he began to struggle against both righties and lefties and his ERA ballooned. Back in September, Oakland A's Baseball Operations Analyst Farhan Zaidi told OaklandClubhouse.com that the team planned to use Marshall in a more situational role next season and expect that he will have more success in that role.
"I think when we got him, we really wanted to target his usage to be a situational left-hander, which we thought as a team would be a useful piece to have. We felt that he could get major league lefties out, even coming out of A-ball. I think if you look at his splits, I think he did pretty well against left-handed hitters," Zaidi said.
Right-hander Jose Garcia was designated for assignment to make room for Marshall. Garcia was claimed off of waivers by the A's earlier this off-season. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't be available to pitch at the start of the season. If Garcia clears waivers, he will remain property of the A's.
