Copeland To Debut; Eveland Sent Down
Copeland was selected by the A's from the San Francisco Giants in the 2008 Rule 5 draft. The centerfielder was injured midway through the A's spring training camp when he crashed shoulder-first into the centerfield wall making a spectacular catch. He had been on the disabled list ever since and had just begun a minor league rehab assignment, going 6-13 in three games with High-A Stockton and Triple-A Sacramento.
Copeland was the Giants' top pick (4th round) in the 2005 draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. In four minor league seasons, Copeland has hit .282 with 22 homers and a 790 OPS in 1578 at-bats. He is rated as an above-average defensive outfielder and he has stolen 72 bases in his career. As a Rule 5 pick, Copeland will need to remain on the A's 25-man roster all season or be offered back to the Giants for a small fee.
Eveland heads to Sacramento with a 1-2 record and a 7.40 ERA in six games (five starts). AL hitters were batting .380 against him this season and he had 16 walks against 15 strike-outs in 24.1 innings.
It isn't clear who will take Eveland's place in the A's rotation later this week. One candidate is right-hander Sean Gallagher, who threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of Brett Anderson last night in Oakland. Another candidate could be Gio Gonzalez, who was up briefly with the A's over the weekend, throwing 100 pitches in a five-inning relief effort in the A's 8-7, 15-inning loss to Seattle on Sunday.
Eveland is next scheduled to start on Wednesday, although the A's could re-jigger their rotation order to allow for more rest for Gallagher or Gonzalez, should the team turn to either of those pitchers. Sacramento's Edgar Gonzalez and Vince Mazzaro are two additional candidates for Eveland's spot. Edgar Gonzalez has a 4.50 ERA in 24 innings for the River Cats, while Mazzaro has a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings. Neither pitcher is on the team's 40-man roster.
Copeland will join Anderson, Trevor Cahill, Andrew Bailey and Landon Powell as players who have made their major league debuts with Oakland this season.
