Sacramento Photos: Champs Past & Present

Only two nights after the Sacramento River Cats extended their dynastic run in the Pacific Coast League with their eighth division title in 10 years, the team honored another dynasty, welcoming three key members of the 1989 World Champion Oakland A's. Fittingly, the River Cats also came away with a win over rival Fresno. We have the photos inside...

Many people consider the Oakland A's the team of the 1980s. There is no doubt the Sacramento River Cats are the Pacific Coast League's team of the 2000s. The River Cats earned their eighth title in the last 10 years on Thursday night, a dominating run that has defined the Pacific Coast League for the past decade. Sacramento is winding down one of the best seasons of its decade-long run, with 83 wins in 135 games.

The River Cats earned that 83rd win in impressive fashion on Saturday night in front of three key members of the '89 World Champion Oakland A's - Dave Stewart, Dave Henderson and Tony Phillips. After a pre-game celebration honoring the '89 champions, the River Cats pounced all over Giants prospect Kevin Pucetas and the Fresno Grizzlies, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to cruise to a 9-5 win.

"[Pucetas] has been one of their best pitchers all season, so it was nice to see our guys get some key hits against him," Sacramento manager Tony DeFrancesco said after the game.

Pucetas would last only 1.2 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits, two walks and two hit-by-pitches. Clayton Mortensen got the start for Sacramento and worked through some early rough innings to earn his ninth win of the season. He threw seven innings, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with three strike-outs and a walk.
