The Oakland A's announced the signing of free agent outfielder Coco Crisp on Wednesday. Crisp is the first free agent brought into the fold by Oakland this off-season. Crisp's contract includes a club option for the 2011 season.

Crisp, 30, joins the A's after an injury-plagued 2009 season with the Kansas City Royals. He appeared in only 49 games and had surgery to repair injuries to both of his shoulders. He is expected to be healthy at the start of spring training.

Crisp is a seven-year major league veteran and a career .277 hitter with a 738 OPS and 137 stolen bases. The switch-hitter stole 13 bases in 15 chances in 2009. He is considered an elite defensive centerfielder.

The Southern California native made his major league debut with Cleveland in 2002 and he had his best seasons with the Indians in 2004 (790 OPS and 15 homers) and 2005 (810 OPS and 16 homers). He hit .283 with seven homers and 20 stolen bases for the Boston Red Sox in 2008, his last full, healthy season. Crisp batted only .228 for Kansas City in 2009.

Crisp is the seventh outfielder on the A's 40-man roster. The other six are Rajai Davis, Ryan Sweeney, Travis Buck, Scott Hairston, Aaron Cunningham and Eric Patterson. There is expected to be intense competition for the A's starting outfield spots during spring training.
