Cust Clears Waivers

On Saturday, the Oakland A's designated DH Jack Cust for assignment. OaklandClubhouse.com has learned that Cust has cleared waivers and has been placed provisionally on the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats' roster. Cust has until this weekend to let the A's know whether or not he will accept his assignment to Triple-A.

The Oakland A's made headlines on Saturday when they designated DH Jack Cust for assignment. Cust has been the A's team leader in homeruns each of the last three seasons. Given that the A's are not expected to have a lot of power in their line-up this season, it came as a surprise that Oakland decided not to keep the burly left-handed hitter on their Opening Day roster. Team officials indicated after the move that the A's were going to give the DH job to Eric Chavez, the former Gold Glove third baseman who has been limited by shoulder and back injuries the past three seasons. Chavez started at DH in three of the A's first four games.

Cust was put through waivers after being designated for assignment. Every team had an opportunity to claim Cust and take on his $2.65 million contract. OaklandClubhouse.com has learned that no team made a claim on Cust and that he has cleared waivers. Cust has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento by the A's. As a veteran, he has the opportunity to refuse that assignment and become a free agent. If he does so, he will forfeit his 2010 salary. Cust has until this weekend to let the A's know if he will join the River Cats.

Given the A's injury history over the past few seasons, it is likely that Cust will be back in Oakland at some point during the 2010 season if he chooses to stay with the organization. In three seasons with Oakland, Cust has hit only .239, but he has an 829 OPS and 89 homeruns. His OPS has gone down more than 60 points in each of the last three seasons, however, and he is coming off of a mediocre spring training. Cust, who was originally a first round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1997, is 31 years old.
