Cust, Duchscherer Return To A's

Cust had four homeruns for the River Cats.

The Oakland A's announced a series of moves on Saturday, activating starter Justin Duchscherer and adding Jack Cust to the active roster, sending down reliever Henry Rodriguez to Triple-A Sacramento and designating reliever Edwar Ramirez for assignment.

The Oakland A's solidified their starting rotation and made a move to jump-start their slumbering offense on Saturday. Starter Justin Duchscherer has been added to the roster, having missed only two starts while on the disabled list, and designated hitter Jack Cust has been added to the active roster after beginning his season in Triple-A Sacramento. Relievers Henry Rodriguez and Edwar Ramirez were removed from a well-rested bullpen that didn't have to throw in Friday's game thanks to Dallas Braden's complete game effort.

Duchscherer returns to the A's roster in time to start Oakland's Saturday night contest against the Angels. Duchscherer missed two starts with a sore left hip. Before going on the DL, Duchscherer had a 2.89 ERA in five starts.

Cust returns to the A's after the team's surprising decision to start him in Triple-A this season. The designated hitter got off to a slow start with the River Cats, but he had picked up the pace and was batting .273 with four homers and a PCL-leading 33 walks. Cust was the A's leading homerun hitter each of the past three seasons. He will be asked to jump-start an anemic A's offense that has been held to two runs over the last three games.

Going down to Sacramento is reliever Rodriguez, who made only one appearance during his 10-day stay with the A's. He allowed two runs in 1.1 innings. Rodriguez was outstanding with Sacramento earlier this season, not allowing a run in 9.1 innings.

Ramirez has been designated for assignment to make room for Cust on the A's 25-man and 40-man rosters. Ramirez has a 4.91 ERA in seven relief appearances with the A's this season and has allowed three runs in four innings for Sacramento. It is the third time since the start of spring training that Ramirez has been designated for assignment. He was released by the New York Yankees and later the Texas Rangers before being claimed by the A's this spring.
