*Mulder can earn $6,525,000 in bonuses in 2007 based on starts, getting the full amount with 35, and any of those bonuses earned would be added to his 2008 salary. He can earn $3.75 million in performance bonuses in 2008, and his 2009 option could increase to
an amount matching his 2008 salary. If he earns all the performance bonuses, Mulder would make $11,525,000 this year and $16,775,000 in each of the following two
seasons.
Became a Cardinal
Acquired from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for pitchers Kiko Calero and Dan Haren and catcher Daric Barton on December 18, 2004.
2008 Season
Mulder appeared in three games for the Cardinals in 2008 for $6,500,000.00, finishing with a record of 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA. Another pitcher the Cardinals were counting on this past season to bounce back from injury, that wasn't able to contribute. On October 21st, the Cardinals paid $1.5 million to buy out the $11 million salary Mulder was due to earn in 2009. The move makes Mulder a free agent and the oft-injured pitcher could use a fresh start with a new club.
2007 Season
Mulder, rehabbing from rotator cuff surgery in September 06, made only three starts for St. Louis in 07. He lost all three of his starts, going 0-3 with a 12.27 ERA. In 11 innings he gave up 17 runs, 22 hits, and seven walks.
Career Notes
Mulder was 6-7 with a 7.14 ERA in 17 starts in 2006. He was sidelined from June 22 to August 23 because of rotator cuff damage
and what the team called an impingement in his shoulder. He went back on the DL on August 31. He underwent surgery to repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff on September 12.
Mulder was taken second overall by the Oakland A's in the 1998 draft and was already pitching out of their starting rotation by 2000. Along with Barry Zito and Tim Hudson, Mulder became part of the trio of starting pitchers know as the "Big Three" before being acquired by the Cardinals prior to the 2005 season. He owns a career mark of 103-57 with a 4.11 ERA. His 94 wins since the 2001 season rank third among all lefties behind just Randy Johnson (101) and Barry Zito (95). He went 16-8 for the Cardinals in 2005 before dropping to 6-7 last year in an injury-plagued season that forced him to undergo rotator cuff surgery on Sept. 12.
