| Biography: |
The A's claimed Bankston off of waivers from the Kansas City Royals during the off-season. Bankston had previously been claimed by the Royals when he had been placed on waivers by his original organization, the Tampa Bay Rays. Oakland removed Bankston from its 40-man roster in January and invited him to Spring Training as a non-roster player.
Bankston was a top Tampa prospect from 2003-2005. He struggled in 2006 and 2007, which hurt his prospect status. Bankston is a first baseman, although he has played some third base in the past. He is a career .278 hitter with 92 homers and an 814 OPS in 600 minor league games.
Bankston's best season came in 2004 when he hit .289 with 23 homers, 101 RBIs and a 903 OPS in the South Atlantic League. In 2007, Bankston hit .238 wtih 15 homers and a 700 OPS for Triple-A Durham. He was a fourth-round selection of Tampa Bay in the 2002 draft out of a Plano, Texas-area high school. |
