RATED AS THE A'S NUMBER TWO PROSPECT BY SCOUT.COM
Gonzalez was one of three players acquired by the A's from the Chicago White Sox for Nick Swisher in January 2008. The southpaw is coming off a stand-out year at Double-A Birmingham where he led all minor leaguers with 185 strike-outs in only 150 innings. He also had a 3.18 ERA and allowed opposing batters to hit only .216 off of him.
Gonzalez has been traded three times since being selected 38th overall by the White Sox in 2004. Gonzalez was traded by Chicago to Philadelphia before the 2006 seasons for Jim Thome. He was then traded back to Chicago after the 2006 season for Freddy Garcia.
In four seasons in the minors, Gonzalez has a 3.49 ERA and 577 strike-outs in only 492.1 innings. He also has a career 1.23 WHIP. The left-hander's best pitch is his curveball. He also has a good fastball that he changes speeds well on that can hit as high as 95 MPH. Gonzalez has improved his change-up, but it is his third-best pitch at the moment. |
