Oakland A's MLN: Winter Round-up

The Arizona Fall League is in its final week, but the rest of the baseball winter leagues are in the middle of their seasons. We check-in with the Oakland A's players participating in winter and fall leagues.

Arizona Fall League

The AFL is starting its final week of play. The Phoenix Desert Dogs have been eliminated from the championship game and are playing out the string. Three of the A's participating in the fall league have turned in solid performances: Michael Choice, Grant Green and Ryan Ortiz.

Choice has appeared in only 17 games, but he is still tied for third in the league in homeruns with six. He is fifth in the league in OPS with a 1090 mark and is 4th in the league in SLG with a .667 mark. Choice has also done a solid job of making regular contact. After striking out 134 times in 118 games for High-A Stockton during the regular season, Choice has only 12 strike-outs (versus nine walks) in 17 games (66 at-bats) this fall.

Green has also had a strong fall. After a slow start, he has upped his OPS to an even 900 and he has four homers in 95 at-bats after homering only nine times in 530 at-bats during the regular season. Green has a .295/.352/.547 line in 23 games.

Ortiz has appeared in only 13 games, but he has been an on-base machine when he has been in the line-up. He has 13 walks and a .460 OBP. He is also batting .294 with an 813 OPS. Ortiz only has two extra-base hits this fall, however.

The A's other fall league participants haven't experienced as much success. Dusty Coleman, who is on the Desert Dogs' taxi squad, hasn't had a hit since October 8th (a span of nine games) and is batting .077 with a homer in 39 at-bats. As a taxi squad member, he is allowed to play only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Starter Tyson Ross pitched well early on in the fall league season, but he has struggled over his last few starts. His ERA is 5.94 in seven starts (16.2 innings). Ross has a 13:5 K:BB ratio and he has allowed three homeruns. Fellow starter Murphy Smith has struggled throughout the fall league season. A late addition to the roster when the A's traded Ethan Hollingsworth, Smith has allowed at least three runs in every outing. His ERA is 13.50 and he has allowed 47 hits in 22 innings.

Reliever Anthony Capra has had a few good outings, but he has struggled for the most part. His ERA is an even 18.00 in nine innings. He has walked 13 and has allowed four homers. On the plus side, he does have nine strikeouts.

Andrew Carignan has only had two bad outings, but they were enough to inflate his ERA to 6.94 in 11.2 innings. He has struck-out 16 and has walked six. In two outings, Carignan allowed seven runs and three walks in 1.2 innings. In his other 10 innings, he allowed two runs and three walks.

Venezuela

The A's don't have very many players currently participating in the Venezuelan Winter League. Prospect Douglas Landaeta was recently promoted from the parallel league (which is a minor league version of the Venezuelan Winter League) and he has six hits in 20 at-bats over eight games for the Leones del Caracas. Leonardo Gil is also a member of the Leones' roster. He has only four at-bats in six games, however.

Oakland does have a number of prospects participating in the parallel league. Jonesy Zarraga is currently sixth in the league in batting with a .377 average. He is also second in the league in SLG (.705) and first in RBIs (25).

Dominican Republic

Brandon Allen is the only position player on the A's current 40-man roster who has participated in the Dominican Winter League thus far. He hasn't appeared in a game since November 2nd, however, and his DWL season could be over. Allen never got on track with the Estrellas de Oriente. He hit .143 with two homers and 17 strike-outs in 49 at-bats.

Fautino De Los Santos recently began his DWL season. In his first appearance for the Tigres del Licey, De Los Santos allowed three unearned runs in one inning. He struck-out two and walked one and hit a batter. Jonathan Ortiz, who pitched for Double-A Midland this season, is a teammate of De Los Santos' on the Tigres' roster. He has a 2.45 ERA in 10 appearances with five strikeouts and four walks in 7.1 innings.

Graham Godfrey has been a starter for the Leones del Escogido. Godfrey has a 3.31 ERA in four starts with 12 strikeouts and five walks in 16.1 innings. He last pitched on November 5th. Jordan Norberto is a teammate of Godfrey's on the Leones. He has a 6.75 ERA in four innings with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Jose Guzman has appeared in one game for the Toros del Este, allowing two runs in one-third of an inning.

Mexico

Adam Rosales, Edgar Gonzalez, Carlos Hernandez and Andres Avila have all logged time in the Mexican Winter League this season. Rosales has been on the reserve list for the Aguilas de Mexicali since October 20. He hit .200 in seven games before landing on the reserve list.

Gonzalez signed a minor league contract with the A's last week. The native of Mexico has six starts for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. He has a 4.39 ERA and a 15:5 K:BB ratio in 26.2 innings. Hernandez has pitched well for the Tomateros de Culiacan. After fighting off a slight oblique strain early in the season, Hernandez has been on a roll in his last two starts. In 13 innings over those two starts, he allowed one earned run on 10 hits with 14 strike-outs and three walks. Overall, he has a 3.00 ERA in 24 innings.

The young right-hander Avila has gotten the most playing time in Mexico thus far. He has 11 relief appearances for the Caneros de los Mochis. He has a 6.28 ERA in 14.1 innings. Avila has been uncharacteristically wild, walking seven against 10 strikeouts.

Puerto Rico

Right-hander Yadel Marti is the only A's player currently participating in the Puerto Rican Winter League. In two starts, he has allowed two runs on five hits in nine innings. He has struck-out five and has walked one.
