Dodgers Stop the Bleeding, End Losing Streak

The Dodgers' offense came alive today, including Matt Kemp, providing 7 runs and the pitching staff held on to end the club's 6 game skid.

Stephen Fife replaced an injured Chad Billingsley in the rotation but it looked like more of the same in the first inning. The righty threw 33 pitches in the first, allowing 3 runs, seemingly an insurmountable deficit.

But the offense chipped back. A walk from A.J. Ellis and a single from Skip Schumaker placed the Dodgers' first runner in scoring position. One out later, Carl Crawford walked to load the bases. Mark Ellis sent one deep enough to left field to score A.J. to give the Dodgers their first run. Matt Kemp would strike out swinging to end the threat.

Fife would keep the team in it into the 5th, when the team would continue their comeback. A walk to Schumaker was followed by Sellers being hit by pitch. Crawford would walk to load the bases before Mark Ellis would line a single over the shortstop, plating both Schumaker and Sellers. Adrian Gonzalez sent a fly ball down the left field line that would tip off Nate McLouth's glove, allowing Crawford to score and Ellis to take third. Then Kemp, who's been trying to break out of a slump, lined a base hit into left to put the Dodgers ahead.

While Fife didn't get the win, he settled down after the first, only yielding a solo homer to Adam Jones afterward. J.P. Howell would earn the win by recording 1 out. Guerrier, Rodriguez, Jansen and League shut the O's down the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Tomorrow is an off day before the Dodgers get to New York to face the Mets. Clayton Kershaw is looking to bounce back from a pair of rough starts and will be countered by Jon Niese. Game time is 4:10pm Pacific.
