Third Place A's Quiet At Deadline
Instead, the team's only transaction Tuesday was the release of outfielder Bobby Kielty.
Kielty was designated for assignment July 23 to clear roster space for the activation of Huston Street.
The 30-year-old switch hitter has been a member of the A's since 2003, when he was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade that sent Ted Lilly north. Kielty hit .250 with 25 home runs and 127 RBIs in his three-plus seasons with the club.
Kielty was never able to get going this season, as a strained calf left him on the disabled list from April 29 to July 8. He played in just 13 games for Oakland this season, hitting .200 with no home runs and three RBIs.
Joe Kennedy and Mike Piazza were the most likely veterans to be traded going into the deadline, but it was Joe Blanton who actually received the most interest. The A's engaged in serious discussions involving Blanton with the young talent rich Los Angeles Dodgers. However, a deal was never struck.
It is believed that Piazza is a likely candidate to clear waivers and he could still be traded in August. Other players rumored to be on the move (Dan Johnson, Kiko Calero, Kennedy, Shannon Stewart) are likely to be with the A's for the duration of the season.
